Measuring stiffness can define healing of tibial fractures.
We measured fracture stiffness in 212 patients with tibial fractures treated by external fixation. In the first 117 patients (group 1) the decision to remove the fixator and allow independent weight-bearing was made on clinical grounds. In the other 95 patients (group 2) the frames were removed when the fracture stiffness had reached 15 Nm/degree. In group 1 there were eight refractures and in ...
متن کاملCharacterization of Torsional Stiffness in Harmonic Drive
Primarily for aerospace applications, harmonic drives (HD’s) are high-ratio, compact torque transmission systems. This mechanical transmission employs a continuous deflection wave along a non-rigid gear, the socalled ‘flexspline’, to allow gradual engagement of gear teeth. A harmonic drive also contains a wave-generator (a ball-bearing assembly with a rigid elliptical inner-race) and a circular...
متن کاملCreating rigidly stabilized fractures for assessing intramembranous ossification, distraction osteogenesis, or healing of critical sized defects.
Assessing modes of skeletal repair is essential for developing therapies to be used clinically to treat fractures. Mechanical stability plays a large role in healing of bone injuries. In the worst-case scenario mechanical instability can lead to delayed or non-union in humans. However, motion can also stimulate the healing process. In fractures that have motion cartilage forms to stabilize the ...
متن کاملCerclage for torsional fractures of the tibia.
We report the technique and results of percutaneous cerclage used in treating 186 torsional fractures of the tibia, most of which were due to skiing accidents in young patients. It is recommended only for this type of fracture and has the advantages of simplicity, a low rate of complications and a relatively brief period in hospital.
